Back to the Mockingjay!

In Chapter One, Katniss is examining the damage to her home, District 12.  She's realizing that there really isn't a District 12 any longer.  Only the Victor's Houses remain.  While visiting her house in the Victor's Village, she retrieves some of her family's essentials for survival...her father's jacket, her Mother's book of remedies, and Prim's cat, Buttercup.  Before leaving the house, she catches a stinch...something that makes her want to run and throw up all at the same time.  President Snow had left her a gift...a single white rose.  She thinks about screaming, but fears that Plutarch will over hear that from the hoverplane.  Out of fear, she says nothing.

Tess's Notes:  After reading this chapter, I felt like I was right where I had left off with Catching Fire.  The same intensity and survival mode.  I could feel it radiating off the pages.   Katniss finding that rose was what set it off...I already felt like the Hunger Games were starting all over again.  I was relieved to know that Katniss' mom and sister were alive...and Gale, of course.

In Chapter Two, Katniss is back in the hoverplane...with Gale at her side.  They are traveling back to District 13, where the survivors of Distict 12 now reside.  During this chapter, Katniss gives us the rigid details of District 13.  Their way of life is so different from the Seam and District 12.  This is the chapter where she sees the interview from the Capitol and knows that Peeta is alive.  Ceasar, the interviewer for the Hunger Games, is now interviewing Peeta.  He tells about the last night in the Quarter Quell...and how he was trying to save Katniss and their "unborn child".  According to Katniss, he paints a vivid picture with his words of that last night.  He calls for a cease fire.  He makes a plea to both the Capitol and the Rebels to stop fighting.  Rumors erupt about Peeta's stand...traitor? liar? enemy?  All Katniss cares about is that he is still alive.  Once again, Gale is at her side and in her corner...even when it comes to Peeta.

Tess's Notes:  I have a confession to make.  Jacob is my Gale...Gale is my Jacob.  Basically, Taylor's face (and body...achem) is all I see when I imagine Gale.  I know.  I'm crazy.  I can't help it, but don't worry...Rob isn't my Peeta.  I'm not that crazy.  Oh, and I'm happy that Peeta is alive.

In Chapter Three, Katniss agrees to be the Mockingjay.
"My name is Katniss Everdeen.  I am seventeen years old.  My home is District 12.  I was in the Hunger Games.  I escaped.  The Capitol hates me.  Peeta was taken prisoner.  He is alive.  He is a traitor but alive.  I have to keep him alive..."
It is evident that Katniss is still saving Peeta.
Her only condition to becoming their Mockingjay, their face of the rebellion...
SHE KILLS SNOW.
She also makes some other demands...most of the tributes lives will be saved...Prim keeps her cat...and her and Gale are allowed to hunt...and he stays at her side through the whole rebellion.
Katniss also learns that Cinna had already prepared her rebellion uniform before his death.  At the end of the chapter, she is informed that the remaining members of her prep team were there to help her become the Mockingjay.  However, they had been beaten and starved...and left in their own waste.

Tess's Notes:  Katniss demanding to kill Snow was the highlight of this chapter for me!!  I was giving her an imaginary high-five.  Let the games begin!  This is where I began questioning District 13 and Coin.  What was Coin's ultimate motives?  Why would Coin imprison the prep team and be so cruel?  It was a sad moment.

In Chapter Four, Katniss is helping the prep team and getting them out of their imprisonment...she tries to get answers for their cruel treatment.  Katniss mother nurses them back to health.  Katniss starts to see the punishment of her prep team as a warning...a warning as to what could happen if she refuses the role of Mockingjay...or fails.  She knows that she does NOT want to be on Coin's bad side.  This is the first time that Katniss and Gale get to cash in on her demand of getting to hunt.  They go out into the woods, like old times, and are able to get away from District 13...and the rebellion...if only for a couple of hours.  At the end of the chapter, Coin makes the speech about Katniss agreeing to become the Mockingjay and her requirements to do so...and adds in a little something of her own at the end...any deviation from the plan...all agreements are off.  Basically, if Katniss steps out of line, everyone is dead.

Tess's Notes:  In this chapter, I started seeing the difference between Katniss and Gale.  They think differently about humanity and the value of a life.  Katniss cares about saving people, even people from the Capitol, like her prep team...if she sees good in them.  Gale cares mostly about the rebellion...no matter the cost.

In Chapter Five, Katniss starts to realize that Coin is using her as a pawn...once again, she is just a power player in someone's game.  She is prettied up and then skillfully made to look like she had been in battle.  Her prep team took her from Katniss Everdeen to The Mockingjay.  She also gets to check out the pimped out bow that Beetee made for her and hear of their plans of assault.  Katniss is prepped for her upcoming interviews and propos...video clips that they plan on airing to the Districts and Capitol to help fuel the rebellion.  Katniss is a flop...enter Haymitch.

Tess's Notes:  YAY!!!  Haymitch is here!!!  I love him and his "sweethearts".  By the way, a scruffy George Clooney is my Haymitch.  I know.  I know.  I'm weird.

Oh, and a side note...
Thanks to Twitter,

HG from Trueblood Twilight said...

Well, unfortunately for me, I stumbled across a review before reading Mockingjay. It didn't really have spoilers but it did explain that the writer wanted to show the true effects of war-on people per say.
With that being said, I went into the book looking for a fight. I didn't trust Coin from the beginning, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt considering what they had survived.
As for Gale (He has been debating quite often in my home w/my 12 year old daughter) I don't hate on him. I see his point of him, but I don't agree with it. We have to remember that he didn't suffer the HG like Katniss did. He didn't see up close what it means to kill on purpose, like Katniss had to. He's acting out of rebellion and loyalty. Plus he was beat severely that one day and if you did that to me, I'd hold a pretty strong grudge too.
Either way, the first chapters were great and I was happy to see that Peeta was alive. Btw, I did not feel he was a traitor by his comments-I thought he was being Christian. I adore Peeta... Always.

I'm sorry, but I see Haymitch as a dirty, old man. He does not look like George Clooney in my mind. Maybe Mickey Rourke? Haha!

TEAM PEETA!
